So What Does an Instructional Designer Do, Anyway?
I often have prospective clients, friends, and acquaintances ask, "So, what is it that you DO?"
I decided the easiest way to tell them was to show them. I utilized Camtasia to create the following video which gives a quick overview of my role as an instructional designer.
Tech utilized: Camtasia, Canva for graphics, Envato Elements for background music
Instructional Design is the process, eLearning is the result.
At work, we are learning and upskilling more than ever before. The "Skills Gap" is costing an estimated shortage of employees 87% globally. Perhaps it's a new piece of software to make the organization's workload more efficient, updated OSHA regulations, or onboarding of new employees to your business -- each of these skills has to be taught to your workers.
As an instructional designer, my job is to match the learning need to the learning solution in the most effective way possible.
Instructional Design is the process, eLearning is the result.
eLearning includes the tools and techniques utilized to complete the virtual learning process. eLearning can include fully immersive "choose-your-own-adventure" scenarios, explainer videos like what you might see on YouTube, microlearning or drip learning for short bursts of review, or even job aids hosted on an internal website.
It's important to remember that not every learning problem needs a fully immersive eLearning answer. Sometimes, the best solution is also the most simple.
